As a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader, you'll play a crucial role in fostering collaborative learning and empowering students in historically challenging courses. This position demands maturity, initiative, and a strong grasp of subject matter. Through comprehensive training and ongoing professional development, you'll master the art of facilitating sessions that blend "what to learn" with "how to learn," emphasizing effective study skills and a passion for student success.

Responsibilities

  • Commit 8-10 hours per week.
  • Attend all class meetings, take detailed notes, and review assigned materials.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and serve as a model student.
  • Conduct two 50-minute study sessions weekly.
  • Identify challenging content, develop interactive learning activities, and create helpful handouts.
  • Collaborate with Senior SI Leaders and administrative staff for training and support.
  • Meet with instructors to clarify course content.
  • Participate in mandatory pre-semester training and ongoing development.
  • Promote SI sessions within the class.
  • Assist with administrative tasks and data collection.

Application Process

Students interested in becoming a Supplemental Instruction Leader (SIL) must complete the steps below. Please review all requirements carefully before applying.

Important:

To be eligible for the position, applicants must attend a Tutoring and Testing Center (TTC) Position Information Session and must be available for the mandatory training dates.

  3. Prepare your application materials
    1. Contact information for two references (at least one must be an NSU faculty member; both must be NSU affiliated)
    2. Unofficial transcript
    3. Finalized course schedule (if available)
  4. Submit the SI Leader Application
    Application deadline: April 5
  5. Interview (by invitation)
    Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a group interview, held on Saturday, April 11. Interviews last approximately one hour.
  6. Review Mandatory Training Dates
    All selected SI Leaders must attend required training sessions prior to the start of the semester.

Qualifications

  • Content-competency (to be determined by the selected course professor).
  • A grade of B+ in the selected course is required, prior enrollment with the professor who is to teach the selected course is preferred.
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (to be determined by SI supervisory staff).
  • Must be able to attend mandatory pre-semester SI Leader Training as well as ongoing professional development meetings.
  • Commitment to helping students learn and succeed.
